New D&D video game in the works. Its a MMO

While there has been some rumors about a new D&D MMO it is now semi-confirmed.

What happened is that Turbine sued Atari as it didn't tell them that they are already producing this game (or rather, let Cryptic produce it) while they negotiated the free to play deal for DDO.

And as all other big development studios don't have much capacity left it seems that this will be the first 4E game.

Are we sure that's not just 4e? I mean, that's practically already a video g-- USER WAS SMACKED IN THE MOUTH FOR THIS POST

Too bad it's an MMO, which in and of itself pretty much takes me out of the market to play it. I want to buy a game and play it, not rent server space for a character by subscription.

I would like a Dark Sun MMO...

There is a slim chance for that, but I don't think that will be the case.
It would make sense if it came out close to the DS Campaign setting. But assuming DS will be published in 2010 the MMO will be much too late. MMOs are typically announced more than 1 year in advance, not counting delays.

If DS comes out 2011 its a bit more possible.

I guess it will be a FR game in order to catch the NWN players. DS is not as big as Eberron was when it started, so its unlikely ATARI/WotC makes an MMO to capitalize on its start..

Edit:
Being an MMO also removes the possibility of it being turn based as many have suggested a 4E vidoe game should be. I know (have heard of) only one turn based MMO (Doofus) and thats not on teh same playing field as an D&D MMO by far.
It remains to be seen how close the game will stick to an edition, or if it will just use the name.

Cryptic, the studio which is rumoured to deleop this D&D MMO just released another PnP inspired MMO (Champions Online). And while the setting is used, the rules are completely home made and have no connection to the PnP.

Gahh!!

I'm sick to death of MMO's. I want a 4e version of D&D Heroes. Something I can buy, play at home on a CONSOLE with my friends around my TV.

NO MMOs!!!!

I want a multiplayer console game. Preferably something that emulated the 4e tabletop experience as much as possible with turn based action, movement, at-wills, encounters, dailies, etc.

Heck, something that came with a level builder and the ability for a DM to run the monsters would be even cooler. Then I could run all my game sessions in my living room and run combat on my big screen.... :)

The lawsuit pertains to the already existant D&D MMO. See also, the wikipedia entry for DDO: Stormreach. The linked article in English clearly states that Turbine is suing because "Atari acted unreasonably in its efforts to promote and distribute "DDO: Stormreach," and failed to devote the necessary resources to it." There is no actual mention of a new D&D MMO.

Turbine claims that Atari's purported "termination" was part of a strategy it conceived prior to the May 13 agreements that it would either terminate Turbine as part of a shakedown, or proceed with termination in bad faith to benefit from its own competing product at Turbine's expense.

The reference to the competing product would likely be the rumored Neverwinter Nights MMO being made by Cryptic Studios, which is owned by Atari.
